In the world of electric vehicle chargers, we increasingly come across the abbreviation “OCPP,” especially when it comes to charging management and cooperation between different manufacturers. But what exactly does this protocol mean, and why is it important?
The OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open, manufacturer-independent communication standard developed by the Open Charge Alliance. The protocol regulates the data exchange between EV charging stations (charge points) and the charging management systems running in the background (CSMS / backend) in a uniform way, independent of the manufacturer.
Why is this necessary?
If a charging fleet consists of devices from multiple manufacturers, or if the operator wants to be free to switch software/backend, a common “language” is essential. Without OCPP, every manufacturer would force its own closed protocol on the operator, leading to vendor lock-in. Thanks to OCPP, chargers can be monitored, controlled, maintained, and billed remotely – regardless of who manufactured them.
Specifically, OCPP enables real-time reporting of charging status and faults, remote start/stop, firmware updates, reservations, user authentication (RFID, app), and smart charging – meaning the system adjusts the charging power to the grid capacity or the available solar energy.
Which devices support it?
The vast majority of chargers and charging management platforms available on the market today support the OCPP 1.6 or the newer OCPP 2.0.1 standard – this is the basic industry requirement that guarantees a given charger can work together with most software and operator systems.
