A charger's software development matters when you can see the benefit in the parking space: perhaps it becomes clearer why the cable remains locked, or the system can later work with a service you choose. That can keep a wall-mounted charger useful for longer.
OTA means a software update delivered over the network. As a buyer, an update that has already been released is the best evidence of what genuinely reached a particular model.
A small indication can improve everyday use
Imagine you usually leave the charging cable attached to the wallbox. Today you need it for a longer trip. The cable is locked and you want to understand the charger's status quickly.
For Zaptec Go 2 firmware release 3.0.3.2, the manufacturer documented a new cable-lock symbol and improved status indications on the display. Firmware is the device's own operating software (Released Go 2 updates).
The improvement makes an existing function easier to understand. The charger is physically unchanged, but its state is clearer. That benefit is easier to appreciate on a busy morning than in a long feature list.
An update and enabling a feature are separate steps
Cable locking is a user setting; the new symbol changes the feedback. To take the cable with you, you must still release the lock as described in the guide.
Zaptec says changing the cable-lock setting requires owner access, an online charger and a connected cable (Managing the cable lock). In our example, the improved indication helps you recognise the state and take the right next step.
The same logic applies to larger changes: check what the release enables, then whether it also requires a setting, permission or another service.
Updates can support a future requirement
Go 2 release 3.2.1.0, for example, added OCPP 1.6J support. OCPP is a method of communication between the charger and an external charge-management system. It matters if you later want such a service (Go 2 update history).
The right software version is only one prerequisite. The manufacturer's configuration guide also specifies permissions and configuration (OCPP compatibility and setup).
Home users need not manage the technology every day. Ask the selected service provider to confirm compatibility with the exact model and version and demonstrate the required operation. An update can therefore open the option of choosing a new service later.
Your phone and charger have separate versions
A redesigned app does not mean the charger's own software has also changed. For a device feature, check the charger firmware version. The app update date alone cannot confirm support.
Always match Go, Go 2 and Pro updates to the relevant model. The Go 2 improvements above do not automatically apply to other chargers. Some features may also be tied to a hardware revision or specific series.
Keep the product name and serial number with the installation documents. If you later change services or request support, these details and the current version identify the precise system.
After an update, test your own routine
The manufacturer explains how to check for available firmware updates in the app or Zaptec Portal (Checking for updates). Follow the instructions shown for your charger; if a provider manages the system, coordinate the update with the operator.
Choose a time when a slight delay to charging will not matter. Afterwards, plug in as usual. If you identify with a key, use it; if the cable remains attached, check the lock indication.
Confirm both that the charger completes its everyday job and that you can use the new feature. If something behaves unexpectedly, note the version and what you were doing so support can investigate the right case.
Buy for today's requirement
Hardware places limits on software development. Go 2's V2G readiness, for example, is one component of possible future bidirectional charging. The car, charger and service would all need verified interoperability for it to work in a given market (Zaptec Go 2).
When choosing, name the feature you need today, ask about released improvements and establish who will help configure future functions. You will then know exactly what an update changes and where the manufacturer documents it.
