Today, two residents in a twenty-space car park want EV chargers. Others may join later and want connection to remain simple. The first two chargers therefore shape how the whole car park can operate in future.
A good plan separates what must be prepared now from what can grow with demand, allowing shared infrastructure and charger purchases to follow different schedules.
Plan for the next ten residents too
From the outset, plan the cable and power routes to future spaces. Decisions about cable routes, the distribution board, branches and data connectivity determine later expansion.
Planning only for today's two spaces may reopen every question with each new applicant. A final-state outline guides construction even before the timing of other chargers is known.
This does not mean ordering twenty units now. Identify which preparation remains useful in later phases and what must be upgraded as demand grows.
Pro backplates can be fitted in advance
In a Zaptec Pro system, a charger can be added later to a preinstalled backplate. Zaptec also offers a protective cover while no device is fitted. See the Pro system overview and Backplate Cover product page.
Shared works and individual charger installation can therefore be scheduled separately. Some common work can be completed while the whole car park is accessible, with chargers fitted as residents join.
Every expansion requires technical checks and commissioning. When a unit is added, verify available current, data connectivity and assignment to the correct installation.
Twenty chargers' power is not twenty cars' daily requirement
Suppose you want each of twenty cars to have access to 11 kW charging. Their rated maxima total 220 kW. Understanding the daily task also requires knowing the energy to replenish and parking time.
Our example gives each car 18 kWh measured at the charger over eight hours. Three expansion stages look like this:

45 kW is only an arithmetic average; it does not prove that a connection of that size is sufficient. Actual design must include phases, minimum charging current, different vehicles and arrival times.
Turn the table into an expansion decision
The first two cars reveal real daily need. Before expanding to ten, compare it with available electrical capacity. At twenty, recheck whether the original assumptions still hold.
If twenty cars averaged only 30 kW over eight hours, that would provide 240 kWh—120 kWh short of the example's 360 kWh. Planning must answer through more time, greater capacity or a reassessment of daily need.
Scalability therefore has two sides: space for the new unit and enough energy for the new car.
Share the available capacity
Pro's dynamic phase and load balancing helps use shared capacity more effectively. All current Pro models include MID meters. The manufacturer's Zaptec Pro description covers both.
A measurement connection is also needed for the system to follow changing building consumption. Chargers can then use the current available at the time. Sharing helps when cars connect and finish at different times.
The user side matters equally. The third resident should receive access and a clear consumption report just as the first two did. Test that alongside the new point.
Ask for two schedules with the first quote
One should show chargers installed now and shared preparation; the other, later expansion steps and when electrical capacity must be reviewed.
Bring a parking plan, current and expected user counts, and typical arrival and departure times. After a considered first installation, you will know how the next charger is added and how its user gains access.
